I first wrote about this credit card 2.5 years ago when it was first released (see previous comparison between Amex SQ KF Gold vs Ascend here). The good thing then was the double miles promotion during the first 3 months upon receiving the card, but since then, this card was shelved as there are better cards in the market for miles accrual.

Since 1 May 2016, there have been some tweaks made to the card, which are much better than the changes made to the American Express Krisflyer Gold Card (see here). Summary of the new benefits include:

1. Earn 1.2 miles/$1 for local spend, 2 miles/$1 for foreign currency spend (Jun-Dec 2016)

Under the old scheme, you earn 1 mile/$1.20=0.833 miles/$1. If you spend more than $1000 per month, every additional $500 earns you 300 bonus miles. Now, to make things simpler, they have followed the accrual rate of Citibank Premiermiles Visa/ DBS Altitude Visa card which is 1.2 miles per $1 of local spending. From Jun-Dec 2016, there is a promotion where you get 2 miles per $1 of foreign currency spend. Also, you get 2 miles/$1 for spending on singaporeair.com, silkair.com, KrisShop and at SilkAir SkyShop, both in-flight and online.

2. Obtain KrisFlyer Elite Gold with $15k spending on Singaporeair.com

Frequent fliers would know that to obtain KrisFlyer Elite Gold Status is not an easy feat as you need 75,000 miles per year to attain this status. Now, there’s an easier way by spending $15,000 a year on Singapore Airline tickets. Do note you need to chalk up this amount within the first 12 months of getting this card, which is not too difficult if you are thinking of a romantic trip to the US or Europe with your loved one!

3a. 500 bonus miles when you make your first Grab ride with Amex KF Ascend Card

That’s right, enjoy  500 bonus KrisFlyer miles on your first Grab Ride booking, when you set your American Express Singapore Airlines Credit Card as the default Card on GrabPay for your transactions ( between 5 May 2016 and 4 May 2017). If you have not heard of Grab, check it out here (first timers get $8 off when you sign up here)! Essentially it’s something similar to Uber, but founded in Malaysia.

There are 2 other short term promotions with Grab:

b. 3 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 spent from Fridays to Sundays (till 3 Jul 2016)

Receive 3 KrisFlyer miles for every S$1 spent on Grab Rides over the weekends (Fridays to Sundays), from 6 May 2016 to 3 July 2016 – when you pay with your Amex KF Ascend card of course.

c. S$100 cash rebate with $1000 spent on Grab rides before 4 August 2016

In addition, be rewarded for your spends on Grab with a S$100 cash rebate when you spend a minimum of S$1,000 on Ride bookings before 4 August 2016. To enjoy this offer, simply make payments for your Grab Rides with your Card on GrabPay.

On top of all these new perks, these current benefits still stay:

1. 4 complimentary lounge access pass per year (to SATS and Plaza Premium Lounge worldwide)

2. 1 free night at Millenium Hotels & Resorts

3. Free transfer of miles to your Krisflyer account every month

All in all, this is a nice upgrade package that has put this card on par with the other mileage cards, so do keep it in your wallet or use it for your Grab application!
